An exterior lives through −30 °C and +30 °C.

Ottawa siding and trim go through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles every year, months of snow against the lower boards, and strong summer sun on south and west walls. Paint that isn’t bonded to a clean, sound surface lifts at the first winter, and paint on wood that wasn’t primed or caulked lets water in behind it. Most failed exteriors fail at the prep stage, not the paint.

So an exterior starts with washing to remove dirt, mildew and chalky old paint, then scraping and sanding loose areas, repairing or flagging rotten boards, priming bare wood, and caulking joints and gaps. The finish coats are exterior acrylics rated for our temperature swings, applied only when the weather will let them cure.

We’ll also tell you when paint isn’t the answer. Siding that’s cracked, warped or rotting through won’t be saved by a coat of paint, and painting over it only hides the problem for a season. In those cases we show you what we found, so you can decide whether to repair or replace those boards first.

  • Washed first. Dirt, mildew and chalk removed so the new paint bonds.
  • Scraped and primed. Loose paint removed and bare wood primed before any colour goes on.
  • Caulked and sealed. Gaps at trim, corners and penetrations sealed against water.
  • Weather-aware. Painting only when temperature, dew and rain allow a proper cure.

  • Scrape, sand, repair

Loose and peeling paint removed, edges feathered, small wood repairs made or flagged, and bare spots primed.

  • Climate-rated coatings

Exterior acrylic paints, vinyl-safe colours on vinyl siding, and the right product for each surface.

  • Cleanup & warranty

Gardens and walkways protected, paint chips collected, a walkthrough and a written workmanship warranty.

From the front door to the whole house.

A full exterior repaint isn’t always needed. Fresh trim, a new front-door colour and painted garage doors can change the look of a house for a fraction of the cost, and we’ll tell you honestly if the siding has years left in it.

Colour choices outside are bigger decisions than inside: they need to work against snow for five months and green for four, and on vinyl siding they’re limited by heat. We’ll show you large samples on the house before you commit.

Trim and doors are where colour does the most work. A darker trim colour can sharpen a light house, and a contrasting front door gives the street something to look at. We’ll talk through combinations that suit the brick, stone or roof you already have.

Exterior colours that work in Ottawa
  • Wood siding
    Clapboard, shakes and board-and-batten.
  • Vinyl & aluminum siding
With vinyl-safe colours and the right primers.
  • Trim, fascia & soffits
The details that frame the house.
  • Front & garage doors
    Durable enamels for high-touch surfaces.
  • Window frames & shutters
Masked, sanded and finished by hand.
  • Porches, railings & steps
Wood and metal, prepared for traffic and snow.

What each siding needs.

The surface decides the prep, the primer and how long the paint will last. Here’s how the common Ottawa exteriors compare.

  • ChalkingOld exterior paint breaks down into a powdery chalk. Painting over it without washing is one of the most common reasons new paint peels.
  • MildewNorth walls and shaded areas grow mildew. It’s treated and washed off before painting, or it grows back through the new coat.
  • Vinyl-safe coloursPaint makers publish vinyl-safe colour ranges that won’t absorb enough heat to warp the siding. On vinyl, we stay within them.
  • Lead paintHomes built before about 1960 may have lead paint on trim and siding. It’s tested before scraping and handled with lead-safe practices.
  • CaulkingExterior caulk shrinks and cracks over Ottawa winters. Fresh, paintable sealant at trim joints keeps water out.
  • Steel & fibreglass doorsThey need cleaning, light sanding and a bonding primer for paint to stick.

Exterior painting in Ottawa’s short season.

Ottawa’s exterior painting season runs roughly from May to early October. Many exterior paints need air and surface temperatures above about 10 °C while they dry, and some low-temperature formulas can go on down to around 2–4 °C; the label decides. Just as important: no rain for several hours, surfaces dry from morning dew, and no overnight frost before the paint has set.

Sun is the other factor. Painting a south wall at midday in July bakes the paint before it can level, leaving lap marks and blisters. We follow the shade around the house, painting each wall while it’s out of direct sun.

Heritage districts, condos and townhomes

Painting the outside of a house doesn’t need a building permit. In heritage conservation districts, though, exterior changes can need heritage approval, and painting previously unpainted brick is usually discouraged.

Condo and townhome communities often control exterior colours through their declarations or boards. Check before choosing a new colour; we’ll paint to the approved palette.

Painting in Ottawa weather
  • Temperature. Air and surface within the label’s range while the paint dries, often above about 10 °C.
  • Dew and rain. No painting on wet morning surfaces, or with rain due in the next few hours.
  • Frost. Late-season jobs scheduled so the paint sets before the first overnight frost.
  • Sun. Each wall painted out of direct midday sun.
  • The snow line. Lower boards and trim checked for moisture damage from months of snow.

What makes exterior painting cost more or less.

The size and height of the house set the baseline: a bungalow you can reach from a ladder is much faster than a two-storey home with a steep back yard. After that, prep decides the price. Peeling wood trim and siding take far longer than sound, chalky vinyl that only needs washing. Our Ottawa painting cost guide and estimator shows how it adds up.

Detail matters too. Trim, shutters, window frames and fascia are brushed by hand, so a house with a lot of detail costs more than a plain one of the same size.

Planning an exterior repaint around Ottawa’s seasons.

The window for exterior painting is short, and the best weeks book early.

  • Winter

Planning season. Get quotes and choose colours; spring and summer dates fill up first.

  • Spring

Painting starts once nights stay above freezing. Damp spring weather means more washing and drying time.

  • Summer

Peak season. We work around heat and direct sun so the paint levels and cures properly.

  • Fall

Cool, dry days can be ideal, but jobs are scheduled to finish before overnight frost.

Exterior painting questions

Still deciding? Call or text 613-806-4000 and we'll talk it through.

How much does it cost to paint a house exterior in Ottawa?

Most exteriors run about $2.75–5 per square foot of paintable surface. A bungalow is often $5,500–10,000 and a two-storey home $8,500–15,000, depending on height, prep and detail.

When can you paint outside in Ottawa?

Usually from May to early October. The paint needs dry surfaces, the right temperature while it dries and no frost overnight, so we schedule around the forecast.

Can you paint vinyl siding?

Yes, with a vinyl-safe acrylic paint and a colour from the manufacturer’s vinyl-safe range. Colours much darker than the original can absorb enough heat to warp the siding.

How long does exterior paint last?

On well-prepared wood, about 5 to 8 years; on vinyl, aluminum and fibre cement, often longer. South and west walls usually wear first.

Do you repair rotten trim?

We make small wood repairs as part of prep and flag larger rot. Replacement boards can be handled by our sister company Ryan’s Renos before we paint.

Do I need to be home?

No. We need access around the outside, an outdoor tap and windows closed on the side we’re working on.

Is it worth painting aluminum siding?

Often, yes. Faded, chalky aluminum siding takes paint well once the chalk is washed off and bare spots are primed. It costs a fraction of new siding and can look new again for many years.

Should I change my exterior colour?

It’s your call, but test first: paint large samples on two sides of the house and look at them morning and evening. On vinyl, stay within the vinyl-safe range, and check condo or heritage rules if they apply.

What about lead paint on an older house?

Homes built before about 1960 may have lead in older paint layers. We test surfaces we plan to scrape or sand, and use lead-safe containment, collection and cleanup where it’s present.
