16 Painting kitchen cabinets
The project most likely to fail without the right process.
Kanata · Ottawa west
Interior painting, kitchen cabinet painting and exterior refreshes for Kanata homes, from Beaverbrook and Katimavik to Bridlewood, Kanata Lakes and Morgan’s Grant.
Painting in Kanata
Kanata grew in waves, and you can read them in the paint: Beaverbrook’s modernist homes from the 1960s and 70s, Katimavik-Hazeldean’s 1970s and 80s two-storeys, Bridlewood and Glen Cairn from the 80s and 90s, and Kanata Lakes, Morgan’s Grant and Kanata North from the late 90s on. Many of the middle-aged homes still have their original oak kitchens, honey-coloured trim and beige builder walls.
That makes Kanata a natural place for cabinet painting. Oak cabinets are usually solid wood boxes in good shape, and painting them, with the grain filled if you want a smooth look, transforms a kitchen for a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. Painting the matching oak trim and railings at the same time pulls the whole main floor together.
Outside, most homes here are a mix of brick fronts with vinyl or aluminum siding on the sides and back. Faded, chalky aluminum siding takes paint well after a thorough wash, and vinyl can be painted in a vinyl-safe colour. Brick fronts are usually best left alone or cleaned, unless you’re set on a change.

Local know-how
The age of the house, its surfaces and the local rules all shape a Kanata paint job. These are the things we check first.
Yes. Both need degreasing, sanding and a bonding primer. For cabinets, we can fill the oak grain for a smooth finish or leave it textured.
No building permit is needed to paint inside or outside a house in Kanata. Condo and townhome communities can control exterior colours through their declarations, so check before choosing a new one.
Most kitchens run about $3,500–6,500 sprayed, depending on the number of doors and drawers and whether the oak grain is filled.
Yes. Once the chalky surface is washed off and an adhesion primer is applied where needed, aluminum siding takes exterior acrylic paint well.
